Subject: [ageofconquest] Answers to questions raised (all groups)

Q?: Where are the sign up links?
A: The sign up pages are accessed from the individual scenario pages within the main website:
www.lords-of-conquest.com

Q?: Cannot find the tutorial in my old version of the diploware, only old games?
A: No problem, as it is downloaded with the diploware in a new download, but for the tests, just use the space to identify your preferred realm, or leave blank

Q: I have downloaded several diplowares but the when trying to open the Tutorial file from within the program---get an "Access violation" message?.
A: Just like in Windows generally, the diploware goes to the last directory accessed and so, if "Age of Conquest" was the last Tutorial File opened, the diploware gives this directory again - not surprisingly, that Tutorial File (or a turn file later) will not fit a different scenario diploware. Please change the directory offered to the correct one for the scenario you are trying to open. This is made confusing by the Tutorial Files all being called just that - noted for potential later improvements.

Q: Cannot download the Dragonlords diploware?
A: As mentioned in Update 5, the Dragonlords diploware download is not currently functioning, will be sorted in due course, but priority given to getting the four test games set up.

Status at this posting for sign ups (9 hours on):

Medieval - 7 of 23
Napoleonic - 4 of 11
Shogun - 4 of 20
Age of Conquest - 2 of 19

note: [Dragonlords - 2 but not running yet, unless enough people have the diploware installed from before?]

Hope this is of help,

GM

From experience, Access violation is usually because of a conflict with
another active program, as advised in the rules, it is generally good
practice to only have the GUI (diploware) running.

I am assuming that you have Windows 7, if so read on:

The is an identified issue with Windows 7, and doing a lot of homework
on it, there has been a recognised W7 complaint on file/folder
permissions, even if running as Administrator. A lot of references to
"UAC" in W7, but essentially there is a potential workaround that has
fixed it for some W7 users.

A player in the MD2 test game tried something out for me, and it
worked, so I am hoping that it works for all who have had a problem.

Since the diploware allows you to open a turn file from any chosen
directory, try saving the turn attachment from your e-mail, to your
Documents (maybe in a new MD2 or NAP folder?) and then try to open with
the GUI.

Similarly, when saving, change the directory to the one chosen above,
and save to there. This will facilitate attachment of the .sav file to
an e-mail to send in the turn.

This has not always worked, and the solution seems to be in changing
the folder permission for the game folder and the "saved old turns"
folder so that the diploware can save the turns (and even the user can
then do this). The process needs documenting and proving, and may still
be best done in a Documents workaround, rather than in Program Files.

Cheers

GM

Not on the priority list but once everything is up and running, I would favor
resetting all victory boards to zero.It is going to be hard for newcomers to
catch up with those that already have thousands of points.

Fresh start for everybody, seems a good moment with the restart of AGEGAMES.

I agree this is a good sugestion though maybe they could keep the old victory list. It is my understanding that some of the winners there have since died, it would be a shame to completely scrub away their achievments.

I agree with keeping the old victory list to remember the great commanders of past times. It´s only one link more.

I agree! A fresh start sounds like a great idea. Why be forced to compete with

Very valid point - perhaps the games might go, but the roll of honour
stay for each scenario?.

Gosh!!! I tell you guys!... you should all try Shogunate! I am soo spoiled!...
this is my first game for AoC (I think! It has been so long) and I tell you... I
am soo used to ALOT more powerful units than these ancient ones!
Our cavalry and even foot soldiers in the Shogunate game can kick but with
their percentage numbers than these ancient units in AoC!
I am so looking forward to utilizing my samurai in our upcoming game of
Shogunate!
If you haven't tried it, people you should sign up for Shogunate!

I suggest if a new victory board is started or redesigned, it should have a listing of averages VPs per game.  The  newbee and causal player may stay around longer if he see a chance for him to be a leader.  This is not to take away from the great achievements of those on the Victory Board but to supplement it.  In American football we have players recognizes by all time running yards and by yards per run

Greetings to all players signed-up to AGE accounts since the relaunch began, a
huge thank you for your support.

This announcement is to bring you all up to date with the progress in the
reincarnation of the game system and scenarios.

Apologies that it is quite long, but a lot of info to pass on.

There are test games running in five of the six available scenarios - full
detail of each follows this general update section.

System issues identified
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
1) The web page www.agegames.co.uk/newturns.php is fully functional for
reportfile download and savefile upload, BUT there is NO e-mail confirmation of
upload, with or without text representation of orders sent. Working on this
issue.
2) Any references to Agegames.com and LordsofConquest.com (no hyphens in it) are
snags to be resolved - they have nothing to do with the new ownership!.To change
them in the diploware(s) requires the source code, which I do not get until the
end of the contracted handover phases from the vendor.
3) Windows 7 (and Vista in 2 cases) remains the biggest issue due to failure to
handle file saving from the diploware. There have been a lot of helpful
suggestions and patient players, presently there are 8 would-be players who
cannot save turn orders and are awaiting a fix/solution.

System notices
* * * * * * * *
1) ALL testgame positions have Royalty status after turn #1 has been run, to
create an even playing field and allow new players the chance to use the Royalty
features.
THERE IS NO DONATION REQUIRED FOR THIS!!!!!

2) Standard games remain free for Commoner play, and will cost £1.50 per turn
donation for Royalty (circa $2.25 equivalent subject to the vagaries of the
exchanges - compares to $2.49 when AGE went off air)
The donate web page is now functional under the new ownership, using a PayPal
connection.

3) Any suggestions for improvements are welcomed e.g. website additional pages
such as histography or references?. Or game improvements/modifications (these
are a lot harder to consider, but always interested).

Medieval Diplomacy - 3 testgames running - Wednesday deadline
******************
mtn (at turn 10)
mtp (at turn 5)
mtq (at turn 3)

No testgame pending currently, and none are now planned until options such as
Fog of War are tested.

!!!!! Standard games, Commoner freeplay, can now begin if players ok with this.

There are 13 waiting for a new game - will send out confirm mails as some
already have 3 games

Known issues:
i) icon s37 (Heavy Cavalry) incorrect - fixed diploware available for download
on website, plus manual fix on the medievalwars yahoo group

Napoleonic Empires - 2 testgames running - Thursday deadline
******************
nfu (at turn 10)
nfv (at turn 1)

there are no players currently waiting for a game

Known issues:
None currently advised

Age of Conquest - 1 testgame running - Friday deadline
**************************
apx (at turn 10)

testgame apy pending - 12 spaces left

There are 12 signed-up waiting for a game - will send out confirm mails as some
already have 3 games

Known issues:
None currently advised

Shogunate - 1 testgame running- Saturday deadline
*********
shv (at turn 9)

testgame shw pending - 20 spaces to fill

There are 8 signed-up waiting for a game - will send out confirm mails as some
already have 3 games

Known issues:
None currently advised

Dragonlords - 1 testgame running - Saturday deadline
***********
dm2 (at turn 6)

testgame dm3 pending - 19 places left

There are 11 signed-up waiting for a game - will send out confirm mails as some
already have 3 games

Known issues:
i) rulebook troop table incorrect - issue listed for fixing
ii) larger version of diploware now has the correct autosend domain - download
for sounds etc.

Galactic Warlords - has now been added to the website - deadline to be decided
when enough players to start a game off
*****************
One for definite testing - historically the least played of the scenarios.
Autosend works ok.

testgame gwh pending - 26 places left

Known issues:
None currently advised - improved "Study" display background in place

That is probably enough for now, and I hope that it is useful.

Apologies if you get multiple copies, but putting on all the Yahoo groups and
Yuku forums.

I am still learning rapidly, or too slowly (especially PHP, perl, C++ and
Delphi), and thanks again for the support.

Good gaming

I presume that "wine" in the Linux context is some form of Windows

Otherwise, "Chateau Neuf du Pape" or "Cotes de Nuits Villages" are my

You know Delwayne, while I (and I'm sure others) appreciate your enthusiasm
there are very few "new" players to these groups, we are almost all very aware
of the various games. Most of us have played almost all of them.

And I'm curious, were was it heralded back in the day? While enjoying the games
all vets are aware of the issues Tim also had getting turns done on time. The
fact he was also from San Diego made people look at me funny at times and wonder
if I was him. (I wasn't)

hehe... actually there are a few new players to these groups... I am surprised when asking and finding out about some players that they have said that "they haven't played it before".. and they usually played one or another...  my message was for some of those "non vets".
Also, I had heard Dragonlords was the first and there were many players before? could be mistaken, and that it had stopped for awhile while the other games were played?  So, I could be mistaken....   but I'm amazed at the number of players there are for all the other games (multiple ones being played for MD2, Shogunate, etc., but there is only one DL game going on...)   again, unless I'm mistaken....

There are 2 Dragon games going that I know of at the moment.  It is good to see a lot of familiar players as well as some Vets that I have not had the pleasure to play with or against and some players that have never played, or are trying a game they did not play in the past.

At least 2, there may be a 3rd. And no more than 3 of any of the games going
yet. a list has been started.

And my point is a lack of new players signing up to the yahoo groups yet.

All the games ended at about the same time. There were active games of
everything except maybe Galactic Warlords (which was never as popular) when the
GM pulled the plug ie: stoped responding at all.

And as we said, at least 2 Dragnlords currently going.

Ahh... yes, that's right....   well, another thing we would like to get started...
when will we combine all of them into one forum, but sectioned off for each type game?

The topic of a formalised discussion board has been raised and there is
the Kobo forum, but it is my intention to get a phpBB forum up on the
Agegames website, just need the time and a bit of learning.

I will be issuing a Update on progress across the boards in the next
few days, just trying to get some answers from the original owner on
final bits and pieces.

There are indeed 2 DL games going, + 1 filling.

Cheers

Following comments made in the various Yahoo Groups, there is a new forum set up
for the AGEgames community, allowing all the scenarios to be found in one place.
There will be links set up on the websites, but for now, the link is:

http://www.agegames.co.uk/bbforum

Hope to see you there,

I think you will see, there is one general area.

General area is a subforum under the AGEgames header forum - I had not
