I'm forwarding this from the Cape Wars list, as it's a review for wagons that
many here I think would find useful. The company involved also sells a "Rorke's
Drift" set that includes wagons, bell tents and buildings. Photos of the
products are available on the site, and the prices certainly seem reasonable,
especially for our brethren in the UK. And something like wagons I find very
expensive in metal, so in wood it makes a lot of sense to me...

I'm not affiliated with the company, I haven't even bought from them, but I'm
certainly planning to!

Subject: [CapeWars] Wagons

Hi all,
After a bit of a lull on CFW matters I just wanted to share with you these
wonderful South African-style wagons. I first saw them on ebay, and I see you
can get some of them from North Star, but here is their website -
http://www.4ground.co.uk/Default.aspx?page=292
They come as part of a sheet of laser-cut press-out MDF (wood). Construction
is rated suitable for ages 14+ - I have to say once or twice I wished my 14
year-old was on hand to help me out because, although the parts are very cleanly
cut and press out and fit together very well, I did scratch my head a few times
before getting it right. And once I pressed together a little too hard and
snapped the front axle - although it has glued back together well enough.
I really like this wagon particularly, which is the classic heavy transport
wagon used not only on the Frontier but also in the Zulu War and Boer War. I've
also bought - but not yet assembled - the two-wheeled cart, which is pretty much
exactly what the 24th were using to ferry their ammunition around in (certainly
at iSandlwana, but presumably earlier on the Frontier). And the General Purpose
wagon - which they are keen to stress is A general purpose wagon, not THE
British military pattern GS Wagon - looks just fine as a Boer Trek wagon, only
lacking the swept-up sides at the back. It would also do, by the way, as a GS
wagon!
When they are assembled the models have a wonderful natural wood look, and I
certainly plan to keep some like this in future. But I wanted on this one to try
out my painting skills, to see if I could get that sun-bleached painted look
that is so familiar from contemporary watercolours. I painted it in various
water-based washes and thinned out colours (Foundry paints etc), and am feeling
very smug about the result.
Honestly, I think this is the best, most atmospheric southern African wagon
out there (much as I like the North Star one!) - and the best thing? They cost
around a fiver each - so you can build up an entire transport column for the
price of a unit of figures.
    Thoroughly recommended.

I've managed an entire release pertinent to the colonial Wars group:

PBT-24 The Mad Guru
PBT-25 The Sergeants 3 & Gunga Din
PGS-15 German Colonial Rifles

The promised packs complimenting the Thuggee Cultist series are now out. The PBT
figs are inspired by the classic 1930's adventure film.

I've also added some German rifles in slouch hats suitable as Colonial
volunteers in Africa and the South Pacific.

My understanding has always been that "PRONE" itself is a formation, so my
answer would be, NO, no bonus. If I remember correctly, isn't there also a
negative close combat modifier for being prone...?

OK. we now have the outstanding minis from Bob Murch, including the guru, so
we're set to go, right? Well, not exactly. The rescue in the temple is a no
brainer skirmish which we have the thugee figures for, and we have Lancers from
many maufacturers for the climactic charge, but which figures will we use to
represent the troops for the battle in the town? Any ideas?

Well, no one makes perfect figures, at least not that I know off, but the Perry
Sudan range Bengal/Bombay Inf. are very close, only problem is they wear
greatcoats "en banderole" over one shoulder, and they are 28mm, so will fit in
well with the Pulp Figures minis.

IIRC, units that melee while prone get a bonus VS barefoot or sandal wearing
troops, no bonus VS troops wearing soft leather shoes and get a minus if their
opponents are wearing steel toed boots. This is to simulate the effects of toe
bites.
I'm sorry. Yes, I am an a**hole sometimes and today must be one of those days
when the moon is in the phase where it comes out. I just look at this
conversation and have this image of heroic troops charging each other on their
bellies and then engaging in things like thumb wrestling and toe biting. Or the
Monty Python skit about the heroic explorers climbing the sidewalk.
I mean, it might make sense in  a WW 1 game with the machine gun fire overhead
and the barbed wire and such. Or some other modern period with the "high crawl"
and the "low crawl." Vietnam tunnel rats definitely. But I just can't see it in
the colonial period. Or maybe in the ancients period with the Greek hero
Achilles who can only be stabbed in the heel of his foot?
I'm sorry. It's times like this my local gaming group used to make me shut up
and sit in the corner by myself.
I'll just be quiet now and do my best to be good . . .

Unless something prevented them standing up (like diving to the ground to
avoid cavalry, being in a trench or tied to the ground - yes we had a
scenario where one side decided not to run away by tying their ankles to
their thighs) we've always allowed them to stand up to fight. Maybe not as
the rules are written but certainly more believable in real life.

Some may have an interest to see the progress and building troubles affecting

----------
Chapter XI Terra Incognita

British depart the Mafrican city of Dongolo for the interior. They march off

----------

----------
Chapter XIV Terrible Battle

danger barring the way. All may be ruined.

The twentieth chapter will conclude the story. It's time for you to catch up as

MGs were RN, so mid grey, mostly black painted iron work and brass for fittings
like adjustment wheels and levers. Try a google search, which should turn up
images which should show which bits were which.

I was just wondering similar things myself having just assembled a lovely
Lizard's Grin 15 pdr RBL a friend got at the Historicon Fleamarket and I traded
him an ACW Armstrong rifle for it.

I used to paint my guns bluish-grey (or maybe greyish-blue) or khaki tan with
black metal fittings, wheel rims and gun barrels. But looking at a picture in
the Osprrey "British Army on campaign vol4" the 15 pdr RBL seems to be all the
same colour (at least it's the same shade of grey in the b&w pic), barrel
carriage and everything.

Of course I'm looking more at the 1890s and regs could change in 10 years!

Hi to all who have posted responses to my question.

I have a lot of sources with B&W pictures and highly detailed specs. but
information on colour is hard to come by. None of my sources mention colour at
all. Trawls of the internet just turn up more of the same.

The only items with colour tend to be modern models or photos of extant guns
whose colours are indistinct and often located in places where they may have
been repainted in different colours from the original. None of these are very
reliable sources of reference.

Any other ideas most welcome.

Regards

Alan Charlesworth

the Osprrey "British Army on campaign vol4" the 15 pdr RBL seems to be all the
same colour (at least it's the same shade of grey in the b&w pic), barrel
carriage and everything.

This site; http://www.colonialwargaming.co.uk/ , maintained by Bob
Cordery, has a good collection of images from British museums. Go to
"Sources of Information" and then scroll down to "Machine Gun Images".

Gentlefolk,

Just letting you know that the final Beta playtest copy was sent out to a
volunteer last week so he can give it a run-through for any final errors or
questions.

Not sure if Tanga will be ready in time for the CSW Expo, but we expect it
to be ready to go by late Spring/early Summer.

Gentlefolk,

I just received this game the other day and I am VERY impressed.

The graphics presentation and components are first rate and the rules are
(fairly) well written too (translated from Italian). I'm in the middle of
clipping counter edges now and while there is some set-up errata, there are
five (5) wargames to play on four maps...a great value.

For more information, please go here.

Also please note that I will write a fuller review in the near future.
